The saga around China domain names continues with this week's rumour that every .CN website owner may have to apply in person for a web address. Luckily there is another unrestricted alternative, in addition to .CN.COM, suitable for the Chinese market: the generic .ASIA top-level domain.

5 reasons why you should consider .ASIA for your website

.ASIA is governed by international authorities outside of China. It provides security, stability and is used and commonly known for the Asian region.

A .ASIA domain can be registered by anybody, quickly and easily without the hassle of documentation.

Asia is the market of tomorrow. Did you know, that .ASIA domains can improve the search engine ranking for queries relevant to the Asian market? The term "asia" itself is already one of the most popular search keywords.

The .ASIA namespace is still young so the chances of getting your desired domain name beneath .ASIA are more likely than in the .COM or .NET extension.

.ASIA registrations help fund community work in the Asian region such as Relief.asia, ISIF.asia (R&D Grants Fund), CreativeCommons.asia, OLPC.asia (One-Laptop-Per-Child initiative in Asia).

In addition to our special offer for .CN.COM domains, we will also run a promotion for the .ASIA extension. All new registrations will only be $14.90 USD from March 1st, 2010. Go and get your .ASIA domain now!

However, if China is your destination market, we would like to suggest two alternative solutions: .CN.COM and .ASIA web addresses.

.CN.COM: An unrestricted domain extension for China

The alternative .CN.COM internet extension is managed by CentralNic, the registry for .LA (Laos) and many other popular second-level domain suffixes such as .EU.COM (European Union) or .US.COM (United States). Domains under .CN.COM are completely unrestricted, enabled for Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), including Chinese character sets, and can be registered by anybody worldwide. This makes it the perfect web address if you do not want a domain name that is heavily regulated.

We have now enabled .CN.COM at iWantMyName with a special introductory offer. All new registrations are only $19.90 USD until the end of April. Please see our domain promotions for further details.

In our next article about .CN domain alternatives we will talk about .ASIA, the new generic top-level domain (gTLD) for the Asian community.

The widely reported recent case of a Tumblr user summarily losing control of a sub-domain and related blog has fanned the flames of discontent amongst users of hosted applications worldwide. The rumblings emerged again last year with Facebook's back down in the face of a user revolt. The more recent Tumblr case also reinvigorates the debate over the subtle difference between a name squat and genuine usage. In any event this incident reminds us exactly how frail the laws of ownership seem to be across the nebulous world of the Internet.

Whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Ning or any other service provider, they all have a point in common. You cannot own a web address such as http://facebook.com/yourusername or http://yourusername.tumblr.com because it is tied to THEIR domain name. If the domain (or company) fails for some reason you are not in control of your user-name and your content. Folks invest a lot of time building their online content and a deletion can be horrifying. So how does one go about protecting digital identity?

The domain name system (DNS) was invented in 1983 and .COM celebrates its 25th birthday this year. By 2012 there will be over 200 million domain names in use. Despite its age the DNS continues to provide reliable service to domain owners who enjoy complete control over how they use and manage their own domains. Unlike usernames, a domain is a secure asset whose operation is governed by a universal set of rules that registrars must operate within. The rules not only protect ownership, but also allow for full portability. You can transfer to a better registrar at any time and you can redirect your domain to any online service that you like.

You don't control your username...

...but you can control your own domain name

With the full implementation of internationalized domain names (IDNs) and the introduction of new top-level domains the diversity of available domain branding options will continue to grow. Many companies keep a small portfolio of branded domains for future use and to protect their digital identity from being misused. Under the domain industry rules a user may secure their personal domain without any obligation to apply it immediately. If an ownership dispute arises, there are rules governing this as well.

If you think your preferred user name might be controversial, at risk or already taken, why not choose a more generic name and then register a domain to control your digital identity instead?

As you may have heard, China recently changed the rules for .CN domain registrations blocking overseas registrars, excluding individuals from registering a domain name and requiring extensive documentation from businesses before domains are accepted. Thus, we have removed the .CN domain extension from our website completely until further notice.

If you would like to secure your online identity in China, we recommend registering a .COM / .NET Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) or soon to be available .ORG IDNs with Chinese characters instead. The registry for .ORG, PIR, is allowing IDNs with the Chinese and Traditional Chinese character sets from January 23rd 2010, 19:00 UTC. Please note that .ORG Chinese IDNs registered in the first 30 days, will have restriction placed upon them by the registry to allow for intellectual property interests to file UDRP actions if warranted. You will not be able to delete, transfer or update a domain during this time.

Chinese character .ORG domains can be registered through our standard domain search which is already fully IDN enabled.

You can now download an auto-generated QR code for every domain name in your iWantMyName dashboard. QR codes or 2D barcodes are square images that can contain different data, e.g. URLs, an email address or phone numbers. The "QR" stands for "Quick Response" and was created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. They are very common in Japan already but start gaining popularity in the western world as well with the wide adoption of the iPhone and Android-powered mobile camera phones such as Google's Nexus One.

QR Code example for the iWantMyName homepage:

Your domain QR code can be obtained by clicking on the respective domain name in the iWantMyName dashboard. Feel free to download, print or put it on a sticker.

There are many use cases for QR codes. One of our favorite blogs ReadWriteWeb had an excellent article series on "The Scannable World":

After a very wet and stormy weekend here in Wellington it was with a palpable sense of relief that the heavens parted and sunshine once again blessed the city as delegates filed into the Convention Centre for the opening of the Australasian Linux Conference LCA2010. As locally based event co-sponsors, we are especially keen for visiting delegates to enjoy a taste of the natural environment in our scenic hometown.

So why is a commercial developer of domain registrar software supporting an open source event? Perhaps that question is best answered by our chief technologist Lenz Gschwendtner who will be speaking at the LCA Miniconf on Parallel Computing 10.30am Tuesday 18th January. Lenz recently wrote an article explaining how we managed to roll out the iWantMyName platform into three new destination markets in the short space of just a few weeks. Being a modular platform, we make use of some fantastic open source projects (such as CouchDB, RabbitMQ, Catalyst) to implement and run the system. But we also give back to the community, by adding various source libraries to CPAN and GitHub as we extend our skill set and progressively develop the platform further.

The business of open source is an important theme that cuts across the entire conference this year and that is another reason why iWantMyName is supporting this event. We think it's cool that the acceptance of open source technology is growing across business and government in Australia and New Zealand. Not only will it lead to greater business productivity, but it will almost certainly allow much greater innovation and diversity as developer communities flourish. In fact our parent company ideegeo set up an Erlang user group in 2008 and we are very active in other ICT groups around Wellington. No doubt many new ideas will be born in the conference hallways this week as various global communities come together.

To help these ideas along we are running some great offers on our newly launched Kiwi iWantMyName site. Of course we have a great deal for our homegrown and much loved .geek.nz domain or if you need a domain for a community project, check out what we can offer for .org or .org.nz domains. For perl hackers we offer .pl and for the enthusiasts amongst you .io (input/output) or .sh (shell). Use our domain search to run a name check on over 80 different domain extensions - the best selection available by far Down Under. Then you can use our great management dashboard to hook your new domain up to any of the popular hosted services we feature such as GMail, Zoho and Blogger. Bingo! Your own customised office within a few minutes.

We are very keen to get feedback on our site and meet some of our customers in person. So please look out for the big red and white iWantMyName banner at the LCA2010 Open Day on Saturday. You can also find us at Monday evening's Tweetup at the Green Man pub or catch us on Twitter @ideegeo & @iwmn.
